Don't call it a ComebackDon't call it a Comeback (02.02.2005)
Erik discusses the joys of trying to learn how to play Red Alert 2 competently once more after brushing the dust off his copy. An entertaining and interesting read, reminding us once more of the splendour of this game.

Very good article Erik - I certainly enjoyed reading it and found it quite relevant to my own situation.

No matter how good you are at something, if you stop doing it, you forget things. Slowly but surely.

Perhaps it comes back easier for some people more than others. I suppose we also have to consider how often we were playing when at our peak - constantly! I doubt I'll ever play that much again; but only because of time constraints, and not that the game isn't still just as fun.

after a half-month or so dormant, im going back to tourny play. Just got off to a good start,( 3 wins no losses) although that may not matter coz i might go to XWIS. Although since its only a half month its not much of a comeback, but it still seems partially relevant.

I'd say you weren't really away, to have a comeback. If you are away from it for around a half-year+, then you can call it an attempted comeback.

I think you have to bear in mind that the standard on WOL is totally different to than on XWIS. I started playing on WOL after not playing in well over a year - I was about 150 within my first month of playing without any significant effort. Paul will tell you the same story I'm sure.

To simplify:

I can go 99-1 on WOL with ease
I can go 6-3 on XWIS with difficulty

Therefore, if you really want to get better, play XWIS and learn from losing to top players.

I played a guy on XWIS last month who was conviced I was cheating, his reasoning was "I'm rank 20 on WOL, no one beats rank 20 people like that". His XWIS record was like 0-20, poor guy.

I'm 1-1 on XWIS now, played someone twice who i think was kane, same IP atleast.

Chris, do you use 'chris' on xwis?

IIRC, kane is a top ten player on xwis, when i saw him in the chat lobbies his ranked was as high as #2. Never, played him though...I'd probably lose though cause I suck, although I did beat this soviet player on lake blizten last night and then proceeded to call me a noob and claimed that it was an "allied map." I had a good laugh and proceed to re-taunt, I'm sure he was pissed cause I saw he went for the early rush but I scared him away Grin

it's too simple, all you do is load up the client and press what ever button corresponds w/XWIS (it should say either WOL or XWIS), after that all you do is go play online as you would normally do and you'll be on xwis (you can even check your online settings and it should say "xwis server" or something like that.

I tried that, but it says something about my serial number when i get into the game lobby. Do i need to enter something in one of the boxes?

Do you have an illegal copy of the game?

I doubt its because he has an illegal copy. The first few times I tried getting onto XWIS it gave me various errors about an invalid serial number.

Its just a matter of retrying a few times and it works eventually.
